SRS and Waste Cleanup

31 December 2005

Dear Senator Durbin,

I contact you today with grave concerns about the nuclear waste being stored in 49 leaky undergraound taknks at the Savannah River Site. Some tanks are in worse shape than others. This presents a letahal danger becasue this highly radioactive material is decaying at quick rate. I leaks into the water supply posing a danger to the drinking water and as time passes it becomes more dangerous to move, as it becomes unstable.

The delay in cleanup is do in part to a delay in the construction of a Salt Waste Processing plant that would help with process of making the waste tansportable.

The process hits a wall because of the above mentioned plant and that reprocessing pumps more waste into the tanks that they are trying to decommission.

This leads to the larger issue of Yucca Mountain as a storage site. Mr. Reid, your colleague and leader keeps blocking any effort to get this site certified for waste storage. I thin it is quite unfair to say that if South Carolian wants the waste moved that they have to find another location because that is above their authority. There probably is no place safer than Yucca Mountain.

Please work this out as a mediator between Mr. Graham and Mr. Reid. I do not wish to see your two distinguished colleagues argue terribly over this. THere has got to be a way to work this out and I look to you to be a mediator in this circumstance. This issue is very important because it helps our neighbors in South Carolina and we need the help of the neighbors in Nevada to solve this national problem.

Thank you.
