Please Support Social Security Reform

10 January 2005

Senator Obama:

We need to be proactive in solving the upcoming problems Social Security. The program is good and dioes work. Howevr, there are upcoming issues with ability to pay benefits. It is my generation (I am 25) that will feel the pronounced effect if the problem is not corrected.

I strongly urge you to carve a path of bipartisanship as freshman senator on issues of such national importance. The strongest proposal is that of Sen. Lindsey Graham. This proposal makes it clear that it is an option to invest in the personal accounts. It also creates safegards to prevent the negative scenarios presented by the AARP. It also aresses closing corporate loopholes as a way to provide money into the system. He also suggests raising the amount of income subject to the Social Security tax in order to pay the $1 trillion in transistion costs that will be incurred under his proposal. This proposal was originally introduced in 2003 as S. 1878, he plans to reintroduce it in this session.

I urge you to sit down with Sen. Graham and become acquainted with him and his proposal, as well as the idea of private accounts. I further urge you to support and possibly even signon as a cosponsor to the bill.

I know critics say that these ideas will ruin the system. I trust Sen. Graham on this issue. He would never do anything that he thought would harm Social Security, a program that his family relied on after the death of his parents while he was in college. He beleives in mkaing the system modern, solvent, and sustainable.

Please consider supporting his proposal. I appreciate your time.
