Dear Fellow American:
The name calling is counterproductive in getting your point across reguarding your disagreements with Sen. Graham and the GOP. I feel that Sen. Graham is one of the few GOP that aknowledges the facts about Social Security and what we have to do to reform it. He is attempting to work with a group that includes Democrats to shape a reform proposal that should be available within the next month for our review.
He has made the hard choice by suggesting that the cap be lifted to $200,000. This suggestion is highly unpopular with the party for the reason you state it raises taxes on wealthy individuals including senators. He has said that the reform cannot be had without sacrifice and this cap increase represents a sacrifice because he would personally be paying more in and he has taken political heat for suggesting it. However, It will help keep the system solvent and protect the budget by not having the government borrow the money for reform.
I beleive that Sen. Graham is not overpaid because he does a good job in his position, which is difficult. He balances the needs of different groups and does his best to provide for the state of South Carolina and the country. He works in a bipartisan fashion because that is the best solution to a policy question. He brings to South Carolina much needed federal dollars and for the nation he is trying to provide guard and reserve members with full coverage under Tri-Care. In his Social Security reform proposal there will be protections for low- and middle income workers. He also supports the Senate's budget numbers for Medicaid which are larger increases than those requested by the President and the House.
In regard to being overly wealthy and not understanding the needs of the middle class, Sen. Graham grew up in a middle class family that owned a restaurant/bar/pool hall which he worked in as a child and teenager. He spent a total of 6 years in the private sector as an attorney and has served this country and his state for all of his adult life. He is not in the congressional system because he will recieve a military pension when he retires in 7 years. He has great health care because of his military benefits. He is what I describe as "comfortable" not wealthy because he has the same type of investment vehicles as the rest of us and his money has faced the same ups and downs with whatever else was in the market.
Sen. Graham is a good man who has given all of his adult life to this country. He deserves honest, fair criticism like everyone else, but the name calling is uncalled for.
YOU LUNATIC, IF YOU WANT HARD CHOICES ON SOCIAL SECURITY PUT YOUR OVERPAID BY THE TAXPAYERS, SELVES ON IT AND BE DAMN QUICK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
