Judge Gonzales Hearing

6 January 2006

Dear Fellow American:

I was shocked to read that Sen. Graham spoke like this on the "Sean Hannity Show". However, my shock soon gave way to a question: What did Mr. Hannity say to provoke Sen. Graham in the response "That's too damn bad"? I have never either heard of or heard him speak like this on a national TV or radio show. I think he must have been provoked, not that I excuse the comment but I understand it. Sen. Graham did his job during the confirmation hearing of Mr. Gonzales admirably. The tough statements and questions were warranted.

While I disagree with your opinion it is great that you feel so free to express it. We are in a serious war and I am sure that Sen. Graham was not cavalierly knocking the war effort or trying to be flipant in his response. Our enemy is a tough one, but that does not mean they deserve to be treated like animals. We need to act like the good guys we are and not reduce ourselves to the level of the terrorists. Sen. Graham feels strongly about the application of the Geneva Convention and the provisions for humane treatment of all prisoners. Humane treatment is the standard we must follow. He feels so strongly about it because of his role as a JAG lawyer and now a Reserve Judge.

I am sure that he has not forgotten the acts or disregard of the enemy. His only point is that we not reduce ourselves to that level by mistreating prisoners. Those in Abu Ghraib Prison were subject to Geneva Convention protections making their treatment a bigger issue. GITMO is another issue altogether as none of the GITMO prisoners were granted Geneva Convention status. They are however still entitled to humane treatment.

The name calling is not required. Sen. Graham and the Democrats who asked the tough questions do not want to see the reputation of our country tarnished and blackened by the scandal. Sen. Graham did not do this to get national press coverage. He was defending himself and his actions. He fells strongly and may have lost his temper, but he usually is strong, resolute, and calm even during confrontations. He must have felt personally attacked by whatever Mr. Hannity said about him.

I listened to your remarks today & on the Sean Hannity radio program today. I must tell you that I am very disappointed in your comments & attitude today. Not only were you quite cavalier in your remarks regarding this issue ("That's too damn bad!") on Sean's show, but your comments were totally wrong in my opinion. I'm sure your response to this is probably the same above phrase; however, we happen to be a very serious war against an enemy that deserves worse treatment than Abu Graib! Have you forgotten that this vermin has no soul & would chop your head off without thinking twice? I expect this kind of nonsense from the moronic Liberal Dems, but I am shocked at your remarks today. What's the point, Senator? Can't you think of another, more constructive way to get some national press coverage?
