Holding Fire
7 October 2005
When the president first anounced the nomination of Harriet Miers to be the next Associate Justice on the Supreme Court I was not happy becasue I saw the chance the no matter what she did she could be seen as a political appointment.
I came out in the blogosphere quoting the Federalist Papers about the Senate's job and even sent warning shots to senators about possibly voting agianst her.
Enter Senator Graham. He warns us to calm down and see what she has to say before we fire. He seemed happy coming out of the meeting with her and thinks she will be qualified. However, she must meet the qualifications challenge. Even Graham, a staunch conservative, is signaling to the White House that just 'Trust me' isn't enough. The hearings will be very important.
There are waves from Senator Brownback that he may vote against her and Coburn is making some noise also. In spite of these, which I will consider, I plan to listen to Sen. Graham's warning to be quiet and listen.
Why?
I will listen carefully because I trust what he says. He is more qualified then most of us to evaluate a judicial nominee.
Based on all these I trust whatever Sen. Graham's evaluation of Ms. Miers. I will therefor hold any further friendly fire regarding the nomination.
