Congress, Social Security, and Taxes
21 December 2004
Dear Fellow American:
I have addressed you before as to the name calling and nastiness not being necessary.
I disagree. The day that Sen. Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002 was a great dayfor South Carolina and the nation. You can expect that a state that sent Strom Thurmond to the Senate for so long to send another conservative like Graham to serve in his stead.
Congress has been paying into the Social Security System since 1984 when Ronald Reagan changed the law to require members of congress to contribute to Social Security. Sen. Graham has said that he wants the benefits he is entitled to because he contributed to the system. He is not a thief and deserves to be respected for his efforts to tackle this difficult issue without being a demagogue.
As I have stated before Sen. Graham does not get a dime from the Congressional pension system because he cannot by law recieve both a military pension and a congressional pension. He is able to retire with a full pension for the Air Force in eight years.
The name calling is not necessary. I must also wonder how old you are if you are calling a 49 year old senator old. Fourty-nine is not old. He is no fool either. In fact I beleive that he is one of the most intelligent members of the Senate. No one wants to drive us to the Caymans where there is no income tax. Sen. Graham wants to make the Social Security system modern and solvent for generations to come. He and his colleagues are trying to pass tax reform and reductions in taxes, as well as eliminating double taxation of dividends and the death tax.
Sen. Graham is none of the mean-sprited things you call him. In my opinion he is a kind and caring individual. I have no problem with disagreement and dissent, but do not like the name calling. To: Sen. Lindsey Graham
